Clinical Informatics

Brian Kwan, MD

Brian Kwan worked as a chemist, high school science teacher, and in the fire service doing emergency medical services work before attending medical school. He completed a residency in emergency medicine at Highland Hospital – Alameda Health System in Oakland, CA, in 2021 and a fellowship in clinical informatics at UC San Diego in 2023. He is currently Health Sciences Assistant Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Director of Education Informatics at UC San Diego. His interests lie in merging the electronic health record with the tools of analytics and data visualization to help medical educators facilitate physician trainees reaching their fullest potential.

The integration of technology with healthcare has rapidly accelerated over the last few decades, with contemporaneous increases in threats to patient well–being from cybersecurity incidents. Since caring for patients is at the core of our identity as physicians, it behooves us to do everything possible to minimize the risk of cybersecurity event-associated patient harm. Consequently, I regard it as a privilege to be a part of this novel, exciting and important work.
